Schools and childcare - Coronavirus

Work continues to ensure children of key workers, who have no alternative childcare arrangements, can access childcare at their local school hub. We are also working alongside partner providers and can provide you with details of alternative childcare provision – email ELCadmissions@aberdeenshire.gov.uk for more information.

The situation is extremely fluid and arrangements must be flexible to meet both demand and respond to new advice from government. On this page you can find out about:

If you are a British Sign Language (BSL) user, please watch our video explaining our schools and childcare arrangements. You can also contact us via contactSCOTLAND-BSL, an online British Sign Language interpreting service.

Registration of essential services and key workers

We are liaising with our public sector partners to identify public sector essential services and the key workers who are required to deliver the services. We are also asking the private and third sector employers to register any essential services and to identify categories of key workers involved in delivering that service. We will use the information to identify those key workers who may require childcare. For further information please view the essential services and key workers page.

Priority is being given to the children of key workers listed as category 1 in the first instance. While only one parent/carer is required to be a category 1 worker in order to qualify for this provision, we strongly recommend you keep your child at home if at all possible. See our key worker childcare flowchart (pdf 42KB)

Planning is underway to make provision for category 2 and category 3 key workers during term 4 with further information to follow.

Childcare arrangements for key workers

As part of our planning activities, key workers in all three categories were asked to complete our initial childcare request form. This activity has allowed us to gauge demand and prepare for extending our opening times to provide a more flexible provision for key workers. If you completed the initial childcare request from and haven't been contacted and haven't got a place you will be contacted by your hub very shortly.

If you didn't complete the initial childcare request form you can apply for category 1, 2 or 3 key worker childcare via our application form. Please see Scottish Government key worker definitions and more details on arrangements with partners.

Scottish Government guidance on key workers

The Scottish Government has advised that they are viewing key workers as those who work in posts which ensure that essential services can be delivered, or those who cover tasks within the local community that support the vulnerable and aid community resilience. View Scottish Government guidance on critical childcare and learning provision for key workers.

School meal arrangements

School catering is provided within our hub schools for those who are attending.

Families who receive income-based free school meals but are not attending hub childcare will receive payment to cover the cost of these. Find out more about school catering arrangements for those in need.

Working alongside partner childcare providers

There are a number of private nurseries, playgroups and childminders that are still open to provide childcare to those keyworkers supporting critical services. These childcare providers offer a high quality childcare service and are working in partnership with the council.

There are a number of nurseries that are open 7.30am – 6pm and if needed some will consider working later to meet childcare needs. They usually provide childcare from ages 0 to 5 but some nurseries are also able to support children of primary school age. There are also a number of childminders in partnership with the council to provide childcare and we are currently 'fast tracking' those childminders who aren’t currently in partnership to increase the childcare on offer across Aberdeenshire.
